Escape the Prison – Walkthrough Oblivion Remastered

Updated: 1 day ago

Your adventure in Oblivion Remastered kicks off in a prison cell. Escaping from the Imperial Prison serves as the game's tutorial, introducing you to the core mechanics over the first hour. Once you're free of the prison walls, the entire world opens up for you to explore. If you’re unsure where to go first, check the list at the end of this page for some suggestions.

Imperial Prison - Escape the Prison

The game starts with a short introduction from Emperor Uriel Septim. Following this, you'll create your character by selecting a race, gender, and customizing your appearance. Don’t stress too much here — you'll have a chance to tweak your character again shortly after the tutorial.

A barred gate in a stone dungeon needs a key. Text reads "One of the guards owes me a favor... fun before the end." Mysterious, ominous mood.

The early section is designed to guide you through the basics with tutorial prompts. Initially, you'll practice moving around: follow the prompts, jump around a bit, and notice how your Fatigue drains when you exert yourself. Standing still will allow your Fatigue to regenerate. Practice interacting with objects by picking them up and dropping them before proceeding to the end of your cell.

As you approach the gate, a fellow prisoner will mock you. Right after, the Emperor and his guards arrive. Move to the back of your cell under the window so they can enter. Upon seeing you, the Emperor recognizes you from his dreams and explains his current situation. After the conversation, a hidden door opens — follow the Emperor and his guards through it.

Imperial Substructure

Not long after, assassins attack. The Blades protect the Emperor, but Captain Renault is killed during the skirmish. Observe the fight — you don’t need to participate yet. Afterwards, loot the fallen enemies for weapons and armour. Make sure to equip the Akaviri Katana that Captain Renault drops; it’ll come in handy soon.

A knight in armor stands in a stone corridor, light mist in the background. Text reads, "Better not close this one. There's no way to open it from the other side."

Your first fight occurs shortly after: two rats will charge at you. They’re weak, so practice using your sword to defeat them. You can loot their bodies for Rat Meat.

Advance through a broken section of wall into a darker cavern. You should have found a torch earlier — equip it to light your way. Explore thoroughly:

  • Find a chest containing a blunt weapon and some gold.

  • Gather torches, lockpicks, a bow, and iron arrows near a skeleton.

Equip both the bow and arrows and practice shooting at the bucket hanging above the well — you can retrieve fired arrows for reuse.

Nearby, locate a chest by the skeleton and practice picking the lock following the tutorial. Inside, you’ll find gold and a valuable gem. Loot the Goblin Shaman’s body for scrolls, other useful items, and the Iron Key — which you’ll need to open the next door.

Beyond the door, the game prompts you to use magic. If you’ve taken damage, practice a restoration spell. Otherwise, use an offensive spell against another rat.

Continue forward to pick up your first set of heavy armour — essential if you're building a melee-focused character. Two rats and a zombie lurk ahead. Zombies are slower but tougher than rats, so consider using ranged weapons or magic.

As you push forward:

  • Kill another rat hiding around the corner.

  • Loot a nearby chest for lockpicks and potions.

  • Defeat two more rats near the structural beams.

You’ll come across a chest with an Average lock — tricky at low Security skill, but inside you’ll find gold, more lockpicks, and torches. Collect food items like apples and cheese, which can later be used for potion-making. Equip new gear like the Rusty Iron Helmet, Warhammer, and Shield for better defence.

Before proceeding upstairs, make sure to loot another chest containing gold and possibly another weapon.

From here, you’ll start needing to manage your inventory carefully. Pay attention to item weight versus value — selling loot early on is key to upgrading your equipment later.

At the top of the stairs, another rat awaits. Move forward and down a ramp, checking the left side for a bag with a potion and more lockpicks. At the far end, a barrel holds bottles of Ale worth collecting. A rat guards the next tunnel — take it down.

You'll also encounter your first harvestable ingredients: Wisp Stalks and Cairn Bolete caps. Loot the nearby chest for restoration potions and search a skeleton for additional lockpicks.

Watch for hanging skulls — there are more harvestable mushrooms nearby. Try gathering them, even if you fail. When you're ready, proceed through the door.

Natural Caverns

Continue through the tunnels until a quest update appears. Your first serious enemy — a Goblin — can be taken out with a sneak attack if you move quietly.

This room contains:

  • A locked chest with gold and tools.

  • A table by the fire with a potion, alchemy ingredients, and a Mortar and Pestle. If interested, you can begin experimenting with alchemy here.

Moving on, you’ll find several Goblins. Trigger the tripwire trap to kill the first one. A locked chest on the left contains arrows and lockpicks — grab them even if you don't use them right away.

Further ahead, activate a log trap to crush two more Goblins at the bottom of a slope. Their chests contain potions, arrows, and more lockpicks.

Next comes a large cavern where Goblins rush at you. Pick them off one at a time, keeping your healing spell ready.

At the far side of the cavern, bathed in light, is the Goblin Witch. She’s a much tougher foe, armed with powerful spells. If you’re a stealth or ranged character, try sneaking up for a surprise attack; melee characters should rush her aggressively. Loot her body for a Petty Soul Gem and her staff — valuable treasures for this point in the game.

Explore thoroughly:

  • Clear out a few rats.

  • Find Repair Hammers for maintaining your gear.

  • Loot the locked chest near the Witch's throne for more valuables.

Imperial Subterrane

Up ahead, there's a hole in the wall that you need to drop through to proceed. Once you drop through, you won't be able to return to this area right away, so if you missed anything, go back now. After dropping down, you'll find yourself back with the emperor. Head down and watch them fend off another assassin attack.

The guards are intent on killing you, but the emperor wishes to have a conversation instead. He'll inquire about your birthsign. Select it according to your intended play style. You'll have the opportunity to change it later if you reconsider.

Keep conversing with the emperor and then receive your instructions from the guard. He instructs you to stay near the emperor and illuminate the path. Begin following them as they depart. On the way, you'll come across a chest containing some tools and witness the Blades eliminating more assassins. As you proceed, search their bodies to potentially find some potions.

The group eventually arrives at a door leading to the next area. Before moving forward, examine the wall on the right to find an elevated chest. Open it to collect some potions, then proceed through the door to continue with your group.

Inner Sanctum

When you reach a dead end, the emperor remains with you as the Blades handle some assassins behind you. During this moment, the emperor entrusts you with his Amulet of Kings, instructing you to deliver it to Jauffre at Weynon Priory. At that point, an assassin emerges through the wall. Allow it to kill the emperor and wait for the Blades to return and handle the situation, unless you're willing to risk dying.

An elderly figure in ornate robes stands defiantly amid flames in a stone chamber, as a gloved hand holds a sword nearby.

Speak with Baurus, and he will direct you to the exit. He provides you with Baurus' Key, essential for your escape. He mentions that the sewers can be challenging, and then prompts you to choose your Class. You'll have another chance to modify this choice shortly. After selecting or creating a Class, proceed through the entrance used by the assassin who killed the emperor.

Proceed to the next room and search for another elevated chest on the wall close to the door. It holds additional potions that will be useful to you later. Use Baurus' Key to unlock the door and descend into the sewers.

The Sewers

Descend the stairs to access the main sewer area. As you notice the water flowing in the drain beneath, look across to spot the first Goblin. You can either initiate with a ranged attack or surprise him. When you attempt to explore the far side, another Goblin rushes down the hall, and a rat is also lurking nearby. Defeat them and gather all the items in the room and from the bodies. You should discover some Alchemy items and tools.

Head down the tunnel to the right. Ascend the stairs and you'll encounter a bridge to cross. Unlock the gate on the opposite side and you'll face one final rat. Save your game at this stage. As you proceed through the next gate, you'll be prompted to decide if you'd like to make any changes to your character.

This is your final opportunity to make any changes to your character, making it an ideal spot to save your game and proceed if you wish to create another character to play with later.

City Isle

You are now free to explore wherever you wish. This guide will become less detailed since you should have a basic understanding of how to play by this point. We'll still guide you in the right direction and inform you about any valuable items to discover, but most of the exploration is up to you.
